Uk food shortages

Uk food shortages weigh on supermarket sales.

In the four weeks leading up to February 25, industry statistics from British supermarkets showed that a scarcity of salad items had a negative impact on sales growth. British has been battling with a lack of crucial salad ingredients, mainly tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers labeled salad elements.

Due to high energy costs, British and Dutch farmers have planted fewer crops in greenhouses, which has negatively impacted supplies due to interrupted harvests in southern Europe and north Africa as a result of unseasonal weather.

Customers can only purchase a certain number of salad items at a time at market leaders Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, and Lidl, and the government has issued a warning that shortages may endure until the end of March.

According to market research firm NIQ, formerly known as NielsenIQ, the fresh produce category total value sales increased by just 1.1% over the course of four weeks while unit or volume sales decreased by 5.4%.

According to the report, stores had trouble supplying the demand for tomatoes, where unit sales dropped 17.6%, and peppers, where unit sales dropped 16.8%.

Despite their limited supply, lettuce and cucumber value sales grew 13.7% and 31.8%, respectively.

When adjusted for inflation, which NIQ estimated to be 14.5%, grocery sales actually decreased over the course of the four weeks, according to the company's figures.

NIQ echoed information from competing market researcher Kantar from last week.

Aldi and Lidl, two German-owned discounters, continued to increase their market share, with sales increasing by 25.6% and 21.1%, respectively, over the previous 12 weeks to February 25.

According to the report, Tesco saw sales increase of 8.7%, higher than Sainsbury's, 8.1%, Asda, and 0.5% lower than Morrisons.

The market share of groceries sold online decreased from 12.4% to 10.9% over the past year.
