No Ramadan iftar meal is fulfilled without samosas and pakoras.

In Pakistan, no Ramadan iftar meal is finished without samosas and pakoras, delicious food.

Pakoras are fritters that may be created from almost any vegetable and deep-fried in a spicy chickpea batter. They are delicious when served with dipping sauces, mint yogurt, sweet or sour chutney, or both. The delicacy has strong historical origins in the Indian subcontinent but becomes especially popular during the holy month of Ramadan when traditional pakora dealers expand their enterprises and new seasonal vendors open makeshift stalls to fulfill increased demand.

The popularity of deep-fried snacks during Ramadan is due to a variety of factors, not the least of which is the fact that they give believers who refrain from eating or drinking anything during the daytime the short energy boost they require to break their fast at dusk. Due to their low cost, fried snacks are also a popular iftar option.

Taimur Adil, a customer standing in line to buy pakoras at the Blue Area commercial area in Islamabad, explained the popularity of pakoras during Ramadan.

“The first is because it's a very calorie-rich snack and you get very hungry during the fast, so, inevitably by the time iftar comes you want to eat something like a pakora … you can't resist it, it's exactly what your body is craving for,” Adil told Arab News.

We have been eating this for so many generations that we have come to believe that iftar would not be complete without it. This is the second reason, which is cultural.

For individuals who like to create snacks at home, the simplicity of producing pakoras and the few components needed are additional appealing qualities of the snack.

The recipe just only two or three components, according to Mrs. Tariq Hassan, who was purchasing iftar groceries at Islamabad's upmarket Rana Bazaar. This explains why it is something that can be created in every household, regardless of social level.

In fact, making pakoras is as simple as chopping up some veggies, typically potatoes, onions, aubergines, spinach, and cauliflower, into thin pieces. Chickpea flour, salt, and spices are used to make the batter, which is then moistened with water. Next, the vegetables are deep-fried after being covered in batter. During Ramadan, the demand for easy-to-make snacks skyrockets. Food products like pakoras, samosas, and other savory fried treats, according to Asghar Ali, a vendor at Siddique Sweets and Bakers, sell briskly during the holy month.

He added that sales climbed threefold and he had to hire more staff to keep up with demand. "We have been in this business since 1942, and the demand for our samosas and pakoras soars throughout Ramadan," he said. Ali stated that during Ramadan, "our typical staff strength of 25 people swells to 80 people since roughly 120 kg of pakoras and 3,000-4,000 samosas are sold every day."

Another vendor, Amjad Ali, stated that she exclusively makes pakoras during Ramadan due to the increased demand. With our four branches in Islamabad, we sell about 300 kg each day. And a lot of folks just consume pakoras during Ramadan.

At a local market in Islamabad, Zulifqar Hussain remarked that his children just wanted to break their fast with the veggie fritters. On normal days, we don't consume many pakoras, but during Ramadan, their consumption grows since we require salty foods for iftar.
