Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya and a close supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin

Chechen leader considers Wagner-style mercenary unit as part of a "plan to compete"

Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya and a close supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, claims that he has plans to found his own private military firm one day that will resemble the Wagner mercenary force. Kadyrov claimed in a post on Telegram on Sunday that private military firms were essential and that the Wagner Group, which has been fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine, had produced "amazing achievements."

Kadyrov, who has been in charge of the Chechen Republic since 2007, said, "We can say confidently that Wagner has demonstrated its mettle in military terms and placed a line under questions regarding whether or not such private military organizations are required." The 46-year-old Kadyrov added, "I truly plan to compete with our dear brother Yevgeny Prigozhin and establish a private military firm when my duty to the state is complete. "I believe everything will work out,"

In Ukraine, Kadyrov and Prigozhin are in charge of forces that, for the most part, operate independently of the military leadership of Russia. Both individuals have publicly criticized Russia's military leadership despite being steadfast Putin backers. Concerns about such groups potentially endangering Russian stability have been expressed by Western officials in light of Wagner's emergence outside of the country's conventional military command systems.

The Wagner Group led a months-long assault on the eastern city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, playing an increasingly major part in Russia's conflict in Ukraine. Kadyrov, the son of the deceased former president of Chechnya Akhmad Kadyrov, has an unspoken partnership with Prigozhin. They have been ratcheting up each other's criticism of the military leadership in Russia and demand a more ferocious campaign.

Prigozhin, who served the last ten years of the Soviet Union in prison for theft and fraud, has long been a close friend of Putin's.

In order to achieve Russia's geopolitical objectives, he sent Wagner mercenaries to fight alongside Russian forces in Syria and other conflicts around Africa. His catering business amassed government contracts, giving him the moniker "Putin's Chef." After years of denial, he finally acknowledged this year that he had ties to Wagner and that he had meddled in the US election.

A growing body of evidence implies that the Kremlin has taken action to limit Prigozhin's disproportionate political influence by instructing him to cease criticizing the defense ministry in public and giving state media advice to avoid mentioning either him or Wagner by name.

Such groups were "both essential and necessary," according to Kadyrov.
