Lancet study: India has more than 100 million diabetics.

According to a study, 11% of Indians suffer from diabetes.

NEW DELHI, June 9 (Reuters) - Some 11% of Indians are diabetic, an administration concentrate found, adding that diabetes, hypertension, and weight are substantially more typical in India than recently assessed.

In addition, the study of more than 113,000 people found that 35% of Indians have hypertension and 15% have pre-diabetes. It was conducted in 31 Indian states and territories from October 2008 to December 2020.

R.S. Dhaliwal, head of the non-communicable diseases division at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), stated in a statement, "It is quite evident from the study results that India has a substantial population at risk of cardiovascular disease and other long-term organ complications."

ICMR, which financed the review, assesses that India - the world's most crowded country - has 101 million individuals with diabetes.

This is 36% more than the International Diabetes Federation's estimate of 74.2 million people in 2021.

According to the Indian government, the rise in diabetes cases is caused by unhealthy diets, inactivity, and harmful alcohol and tobacco use.

Last month, India's health secretary stated that metabolic diseases were becoming more prevalent and that the "lifestyle of a large section of the population has become more sedentary than before."

Additionally, it has been estimated that approximately 11% of Americans suffer from diabetes.
