 A $200 million aviation sustainability fund is established by Emirates.

 

The largest international airline in the world, Emirates, announced today that it has pledged $200 million to support projects in research and development (R&D) aimed at lessening the impact of fossil fuels on commercial aviation. For this reason, we are seeking partnerships with leading organizations in R&D. Sir Tim continued, Emirates will continue to implement environmentally responsible practices throughout our business until viable solutions are found. These practices include raising SAF wherever possible, ensuring efficient fleet operations, and adding modern aircraft to our fleet. Our US$ 200 million fund is for research and development, not for operating expenses like purchasing SAF or carbon offsets to meet regulatory requirements, which we consider routine. With assistance from technical experts, Emirates' Environmental Sustainability Executive Steering Group will oversee fund distributions.

 

Emirates' long-standing environmental policy and strategy focuses its activities on the following three areas: outflows decrease, capacity utilization, and the protection of untamed life and territories.

 

In January, Emirates finished the first 100 percent SAF-fueled exhibition trip in the organization with Boeing and GE. Since the airline flew its first SAF-powered flight in 2017, it has actively participated in the SAF market and has looked for opportunities to use SAF in its network whenever possible. However, bio-based SAF, which is the only type of SAF that is commercially available at this time, is extremely hard to come by. Emirates participates in various stakeholder engagements and industry working groups regarding sustainable aviation fuel. The airline has contributed to the UAE's power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels roadmap, which was launched in July 2022 and was prepared jointly by the World Economic Forum and the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure; as well as the UAE's Public Practical Flight Fuel Guide sent off in January 2023 by the Service of Energy and Foundation.

 

Emirates' greatest commitment to lowering its emissions remains its investment in operating a young and modern aircraft fleet.
