An innovative road cooling solution is being tested in Saudi Arabia.
RIYADH: The Roads General Authority has started a new experiment to cool the Kingdom's roads in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs, and Housing. The purpose of the newly created technology is to lessen the amount of heat that roadways collect during the day. Roads can become up to 70 degrees Celsius, and the heat they absorb is released at night, resulting in a phenomenon called a heat island. According to a spokesman from the Roads General Authority, the heat island effect prevents people from going for summer night walks.
In comparison to the conventional pavement, the newly developed technique uses cold pavements, which absorb and reflect less solar radiation. This results in a reduction in road surface temperature and significantly more comfortable nighttime summer temperatures.
According to the spokesman, the system has been created for populous regions and residential roads, including waiting for areas at bus stops and metro stations and walking areas in residential areas.
According to the spokesman, it was tried in two critical areas of Riyadh, and the results have shown that it was successful.
The new technology is part of several steps the Kingdom has taken to enhance living conditions and bring down temperatures, such as a project the ministry undertook to paint structures with particular paints to lessen the amount of heat they absorb.
