Imran Khan's arrest operation has been halted by the decision of the Pakistani court.
Pakistan's Islamabad - An immediate stop to a two-day operation to arrest the former prime minister Imran Khan has been ordered by a court in the Pakistani city of Lahore until Thursday am.
On Tuesday afternoon, security personnel made their first effort to arrest the PTI party's leader after an Islamabad court issued an arrest order to ensure his appearance in court by March 18. In a case involving the sale of governmental gifts, Khan has routinely missed sessions.
But, they came up against hundreds of Khan's followers who had congregated in front of his Lahore home in Zaman Park and were attempting to stop the arrest. While Khan's supporters flung stones and security authorities used tear gas and water cannons, dozens of injuries were reported.
After a petition filed earlier by the PTI, the Lahore High Court granted an injunction stopping the operation till 10am on Thursday (05:00 GMT) as the tense standoff continued on Wednesday. Moreover, the PTI petitioned the Islamabad High Court to revoke the non-bailable arrest warrant. The court dismissed the plea, directing Khan to give an undertaking to a lower court that he would appear before it on March 18.
Shortly after security forces withdrew from the vicinity outside Khan's home, the Lahore court issued its directive. According to provincial officials, the withdrawal was made to allow for a cricket match that would later be played in Lahore on Wednesday. As PTI supporters celebrated preventing Khan's arrest for a second day in a row, the situation outside Khan's home remained quiet but tense.
Khan had earlier made a speech in which he charged the administration with hatching a scheme to bar him from running in elections.
Khan claimed to have signed a surety bond that ensures his appearance in court by March 18 but said that the police refused to accept it. Khan served as prime minister from 2018 until April of last year when he lost a vote of confidence in the parliament.
According to information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, police officials from the Gilgit-Baltistan region attacked security troops involved in the operation to apprehend Khan, including the paramilitary Pakistan Rangers.
The PTI is currently in charge of Gilgit-Baltistan, an independent province in northern Pakistan. Aurangzeb stated at a news conference in Islamabad, "PTI deployed its goons along with Gilgit-Baltistan police to attack and dispute the writ of the police.
Aurangzeb stated, "The police cannot continue going to carry out a court order while the court continues to award relief to Khan.
