FIFA awarded Messi and Putellas its Best for 2022.
Lionel Messi, the World Cup champion's captain from Argentina, was awarded FIFA's male player of the year, while Alexia Putellas, the Ballon d'Or winner from Spain last year, was named FIFA's female player of the year. Argentina won the World Cup 2022 final on penalties after Messi, 35, scored twice against France.
It's incredible. It was a fantastic year, and it's an honor for me to be here today and earn this award," said Messi on Monday, who sat next to Kylian Mbappe, a striker for France and a teammate of his at Paris Saint-Germain. Mbappe scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final and was nominated for the night's most anticipated prize. Nonetheless, Messi's triumph in taking home the most coveted trophy in sports eclipsed his accomplishment.
"I'd want to thank [coach Lionel] Scaloni and my teammates. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for them, Messi stated at the Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony in Paris.
"I eventually realized a dream for which I had hoped for a very long time. Achieving that is a goal for any athlete, and I was fortunate enough to succeed in doing so.
Scaloni and Emiliano Martinez, two of Messi's fellow countrymen, earned the coach and goalkeeper of the year trophies, and their fans also took home the best fan honor.
Following their thriving women's Euro 2022 campaign, England received a reward.
Mary Earps was voted the best goalkeeper of the year, while Sarina Wiegman, the Netherlands coach of England, won the award for best coach of a team that included Beth Mead, Lucy Bronze, Leah Williamson, and Keira Walsh in the World XI.
Marcin Oleksy, a Polish amputee, scored a fantastic acrobatic volley with Warta Poznan against Stal Rzeszow to win the Puskas award for the greatest goal of the year.
