Erdogan announced an election on 14 May 2023

Erdogan announced an election on 14 May 2023 to select a new president.

Election day will be May 14, according to President Tayyip Erdogan, who previously planned to hold the poll just over three months after a devastating earthquake that claimed more than 45,000 lives in Turkey.

In a speech to members of his ruling AK Party in parliament, Erdogan declared, "Our nation will do what is necessary on May 14, God willing."

Since the earthquake last month, there have been mixed signals regarding the expected timing of the presidential and legislative elections, with some speculating they may be delayed until later in the year or may take place on June 18 as scheduled.

Erdogan's popularity had been declining before the disaster due to the rising cost of living and a decline in the currency. Since then, he has been under fire for how his government handled the nation's deadliest earthquake in modern times.

Erdogan earlier stated that he was moving the polls forward to May to avoid holidays in June. Erdogan is seeking to remain in power for a third decade. According to polls, they would be his largest electoral challenge yet.

Concerns had been raised regarding the ability of election officials to organize and prepare for the vote of those impacted in the earthquake zone, which is home to around 14 million people.
