China's investment in defence and storng the miltary country.

China anticipates a faster-than-expected increase in GDP of 7.2% in defence spending this year.

BEIJING: As Premier Li Keqiang urged the armed forces to improve battle preparedness, China will increase defence spending by 7.2% this year, slightly faster than the country's low economic growth estimate.

China's neighbours and Washington closely monitor the 1.55 trillion yuan ($224 billion) in military spending in the national budget as a gauge of how aggressively the government would bolster its military.

The increase this year is the sixth straight one-digit rise. Like in prior years, just the overall spending amount and the rate of increase were provided.

Due to domestic challenges, the second-largest economy in the world is expected to grow by only about 5% this year, which is somewhat less than the 5% objective set for last year.

Beijing is concerned about threats on various fronts, such as Chinese claims to Taiwan and US air and naval operations near Chinese-occupied islands in the disputed South China Sea.

Last August, China held war drills close to Taiwan to vent its resentment over Nancy Pelosi, the US House Speaker at the time, visiting Taipei.

Li stated that military operations, capacity building, and combat readiness should be "well-coordinated in performing significant duties" in his work report to the annual session of parliament.

He told the mainly rubber-stamp legislature in his state-of-the-nation speech that "our armed forces should work to carry out military operations, increase combat preparedness, and enhance military capabilities" with a focus on the objectives for the People's Liberation Army's centenary in 2027.

With the largest military in terms of personnel, China is now acquiring a tonne of new equipment, such as aircraft carriers and stealth jets.

Particularly given the rise in tensions over Taiwan in recent years, its development and Beijing's strategic goals have caused alarm in the area and in Washington.

Beijing claims to be investing in its military for protective measures.

Beijing claims that its critics attempt to vilify it as a threat to global peace even though it's military spending for defensive purposes is a relatively low percentage of its GDP.

"The armed forces should step up their general military training and readiness, produce new military strategic guidance, invest more time in combat training, and make well-coordinated efforts to increase military activities in all directions and areas," Li added.
