BANGLADESH OXYGEN PLANT BLAST

BANGLADESH OXYGEN PLANT BLAST CAUSES FIVE DEATHS.

Chittagong: An explosion at an oxygen plant outside of Bangladesh's port city of Chittagong on Saturday left at least five people dead and dozens more hurt, according to officials.

Around 4:30 pm (1030 GMT), a blast shook the oxygen unit of the Sheema steel re-rolling mill in the industrial town of Sitakunda, trapping "several workers" inside the facility, according to the local police head Tofael Ahmed.

He said, "The fire brigade extinguished the fire and rescued the occupants from the plant.

At least five people were killed in the blast, and a further 25 people were injured, according to district administrator Mohammad Fakhruzzaman to AFP.

The explosion, according to eyewitness Muslim Uddin, was "so loud and terrible" that it shook every house in the neighborhood.

"The glass in numerous homes was broken. The surroundings completely darkened, he told AFP.

A review of the incident has been mandated by the government.

Bangladesh has a high rate of industrial explosions and fires due to lax safety regulations by factory officials.

More than 50 people lost their lives in a fire and ensuing explosions at a container depot in the same industrial town in June of last year.
