Afghanistan wins a match T-20 match against Pakistan for the first time in the Sharjah series.
In the first game of the series on Friday, Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by six wickets, marking their first T20 victory against its neighbours. After deciding to bat first at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Pakistan laboured on a sluggish and low surface while missing five rested front-line players, including skipper Babar Azam.
Saim Ayub, Tayyab Tahir, Ihsanullah, and Zaman Khan made their T20 International debuts for Pakistan. However, none of the Pakistani batters could pick up speed on a two-paced pitch, and the majority of them were softly dismissed. Replacement openers Ayub and Mohammad Haris, who took the place of the formidable Azam and Rizwan, were unable to predict the low bounce and fell while attempting flashy strokes, putting the team in the batting power play.
Azmatullah Omarzai successfully pins Abdullah Shafique without scoring, and Tayyab Tahir, one of four Pakistani players making their debut, throws a return catch to Rashid Khan. Pakistan was 41-5 in the eighth over when debutant Azam Khan was also out for a duck. Imad Wasim led the way with 18 points as Pakistan narrowly avoided matching its lowest T20I total of 74 against Australia in Dubai in 2012. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, an unconventional spinner, scored 2-9, and Fazalhaq Farooqi, 2-13.
In response, Afghanistan overcame a 10-over slump to 45-4 to reach 98-4 and won by six wickets with more than two overs remaining.
With a straight six over long off, former captain Mohammad Nabi elevated Afghanistan's first victory over Pakistan in five efforts during the previous ten years. The Afghanistan captain, the Khan, stated, "Delight to win, as we've previously lost against them by minor margins."
"It is an honour to represent Afghanistan while leading the team to victory. We never know the wicket, but the mentality was to alter as necessary. In the final two T20 matches on Sunday and Monday, Afghanistan has a chance to win the first series match.
