Wikipedia ban lifted in Pakistan

Wikipedia ban lifted in Pakistan after government overturns "unsuitable action" over blasphemous content.

Pakistan's Islamabad - Pakistan has restored a two-day-old ban on Wikipedia that was put in place due to allegedly blasphemous content. The country's telecom regulator was given a Monday directive by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to reactivate the online encyclopedia with "immediate effect." According to a statement from Sharif's office, "blocking the site entirely was not a suitable way to restrict access to any harmful content."

Therefore, the benefits of this general ban are outweighed by its unforeseen consequences.

A committee has been established by the government to investigate the decision to prohibit the website as well as issues relating to "other online content," according to the announcement, which was shared on Twitter by Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

With consideration for the "social, cultural, and religious sensitivities" of the nation, where the topic of blasphemy continues to be a highly contentious and sensitive one, the committee will investigate and recommend alternative technical measures to deal with objectionable content on Wikipedia or other online information sites. Since 1990, at least 80 individuals have died in Pakistan due to blasphemy accusations, including the accused's relatives, their attorneys, and at least one judge, according to a count by Al Jazeera. The organization that manages Wikipedia applauded Pakistan's decision to get the website back up.

Lifting this ban will allow Pakistan's citizens to continue to gain from and take part in the development of a worldwide movement that aims to disseminate verified, trustworthy, and unrestricted knowledge, the statement stated.

Due to the existence of "sacrilegious content," the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) declared on February 1 that it was "degrading" access to Wikipedia in the nation and gave the website 48 hours to delete it. It didn't say which content was sacrilegious, though. Two days later, the PTA claimed Wikipedia hadn't responded and stopped the website, which sparked nationwide censure and indignation.

Major websites, online games, and social networking applications have historically been blocked in Pakistan. Due to content, the PTA deemed "blasphemous," the largest video-sharing website in the world, YouTube, was restricted throughout the nation between 2012 and 2016 for more than three years.
