TikTok has been prohibited by the European Commission

TIKTOK IS PROHIBITED ON OFFICIAL DEVICES BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION.

TikTok has been prohibited by the European Commission from being used on staff members' work-related devices because of privacy concerns, a spokesperson confirmed to AFP on Thursday. According to the spokeswoman, the prohibition prevents employees of the European Commission from using the Chinese-owned video-sharing app on personal devices, including phones with installed official apps.

By March 15, employees must uninstall the app as soon as they can.

Concerns about Beijing's access to user data have led to increased Western scrutiny of TikTok, whose parent company ByteDance is Chinese, in recent months.

The app was prohibited from federal government devices in the US last year, and some American lawmakers are working to stop TikTok from operating in their country.

Due to similar worries, the Dutch government reportedly warned public servants to avoid the app last month. In November, TikTok acknowledged that some employees in China have access to the data of customers in Europe.

Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, met with EU representatives in Brussels last month for negotiations during which they cautioned TikTok to secure the security of the data of European users.

According to an EU spokeswoman at the time, he asserted that the corporation was developing a "robust" system for processing European data in Europe. To satisfy Washington's concerns, TikTok has pledged to store user data from American citizens there.
