Gen. Pervez Musharraf dies at 79.

Gen. Pervez Musharraf, a former military leader, dies at 79

KARACHI - After a protracted illness, former president Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf passed away Friday in Dubai. He was 79. The former army commander was receiving amyloidosis therapy at the American Hospital Dubai.

Speaking to the media, Shazia Siraj, the spokeswoman for Pakistan's embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulate in Dubai, confirmed the information. The illness known as amyloidosis is brought on by the accumulation of an aberrant protein in tissues and organs, which stops them from functioning normally. His wife and two children are Gen. Musharraf's only survivors.

According to official sources, Bilal Musharraf, the son of former President Musharraf, met with Pakistan Consul General Hasan Afzal Khan to discuss plans for moving the remains to Pakistan.

However, according to the sources, Bilal Musharraf informed the attorney general that the family would determine when to transport the deceased person's remains to Pakistan after holding deliberations. The son of Gen. Pervez Musharraf has received a letter from the Pakistani consulate canceling his diplomatic passport and a death certificate for Gen. Pervez Musharraf. In order to return Musharraf's mortal remains to Pakistan, a special jet will depart from Nur Khan airfield and fly to Dubai. The UAE government has also volunteered to wash the body and family members to Karachi on a particular plane.

The Musharraf family's final reply regarding the transportation is being awaited by the Pakistani embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consulate in Dubai. Pervez Musharraf, a former president, has left a mixed legacy. He had enlisted in the army in 1961 while still a student, methodically moving up the ranks until he was unexpectedly chosen by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to serve as army chief. When Sharif appointed Musharraf as the Chief of Army Staff in October 1998, he was below many other generals in rank. A little over a year later, on October 12, 1999, Musharraf took over as president after Sharif refused to let a commercial plane carry the general land in Karachi.

For months, there had been a lot of tension between the two men, especially because of the Kargil battle with India. Musharraf, president from 2001 to 2008, passed away in Dubai after a protracted illness. He was on the front lines of the conflict between terrorists and the West after surviving multiple attempts at murder. After 9/11, he supported the US "war on terror" in spite of domestic criticism. He fled the nation in 2008, a few months after the general elections.

After leaving office, Musharraf spent several years dividing his time between London and Dubai while giving speeches and lectures. He declared the creation of his own party, the All Pakistan Muslim League, in 2010 and later returned to lead it in the 2013 general elections. While his old foe Sharif was elected prime minister for the third time, his party only received one parliamentary seat.

A few months later, Sharif filed treason charges against Musharraf, accusing him of instituting an emergency rule in 2007. The trial, which had been scheduled to start in 2014, was postponed due to Musharraf's amyloidosis, a disorder that causes an abnormal buildup of the amyloid protein in vital organs, as well as other legal concerns.

Critics assert that because the military did not want to see its former head found guilty, it impeded the legal process. In 2016, he finally relocated to Dubai.

But in 2019, a special court executed him in his place; this judgment was later overturned.
