After a severe, pre-dawn earthquake and a string of intense aftershocks destroyed thousands of structures near the Turkish-Syrian border, the death toll rose to 4,000 and kept going up on Monday. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 7.8-magnitude earthquake occurred at 4:17 a.m. local time in the province of Kahramanmaras in southern Turkey, about 20 miles from the city of Gaziantep. Authorities reported that dozens more aftershocks followed. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck more than 60 miles away hours later.

 

According to Turkish authorities, about 2,300 individuals have passed away. In areas under its control, the Syrian government has claimed 656 deaths, and organizations in opposition-held areas have estimated another 450 deaths. Twelve years of the Syrian civil conflict and the resulting refugee crisis have already wreaked havoc on the area.

At least 11,000 people are injured, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has proclaimed seven days of national mourning. He met with President Joe Biden later in the day, who offered support from the United States. According to the White House, this included dispatching two teams for urban search and rescue.

 

In a statement, the Syrian American Medical Society, which manages hospitals in southern Turkey and northern Syria, claimed that its facilities were "overwhelmed with patients filling the hallways" and that "trauma supplies and a comprehensive emergency response are urgently needed to save lives and treat the injured."

Governments and humanitarian organizations have hurried to send personnel, resources, and supplies to Turkey and Syria.

 

King Abdullah II directed Jordan to deliver urgent humanitarian supplies to Syria and Turkey, and Egypt promised to do the same for Turkey. In order to assist Turkey's rescue efforts, Lebanon's cash-strapped government is also deploying firefighters and first responders from the Red Cross and Civil Defence. The Copernicus satellite system has been turned on to provide emergency mapping services, and the European Union has mobilized search and rescue crews. At least 13 of the member nations have contributed. The EU, US, and UK have declared that they are prepared to assist Syria.

 

According to the German foreign ministry, the country is planning to supply emergency generators, tents, blankets, and water treatment equipment while also coordinating its relief response with EU allies. The United States is organizing emergency aid for NATO member Turkey, including teams to assist with search and rescue operations. Nearly 100 firefighters, structural engineers, and six specially trained canines were dispatched from California to assist in the rescue operations in Turkey.

 

Russian emergency response teams are getting ready to travel to Syria, where the Russian military has already sent 10 units totaling 300 personnel to aid in the clearing of wreckage and the search for survivors. The Russian military has established distribution hubs for aid. Additionally, Russia extended a helping hand to Turkey, which was welcomed.
