After the border reopens

After the border reopens, 60,000 travelers per day are anticipated to travel between Hong Kong and mainland China.

After three years of closures or restricted operations due to strict pandemic restrictions, seven land, sea, and air checkpoints will resume their regular operating hours on Sunday, allowing at least 60,000 people per day to cross the Hong Kong-mainland China border each way without having to undergo quarantine. Authorities on Thursday launched a new registration system for Hongkongers entering the mainland through two main land checkpoints at Man Kam To and Lok Ma Chau spur line, set to reopen on January 8, and the already operational Shenzhen Bay port, revealing details of the long-awaited return to near-normality.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-Chiu stated, "We are virtually at 100% normality. "Pre-pandemic levels are only one step away." The requirement to wear a mask and the directive to isolate infected individuals are the only remaining provisions. I am convinced that people throughout the world can see the genuine scenario because our pandemic issue is under control.

More than 250,000 people in Hong Kong-registered to fly to China five hours after the online booking system's inauguration, according to the authorities.

Following China's statement, searches for round-trip flights between Hong Kong and the mainland on the Chinese travel website Qunar multiplied seven times on Friday, according to statistics from the official China Transportation News.

With approximately 51 million arrivals in 2018, nearly seven times as many as the city's population, travelers from the mainland have long made up the great majority of those who visit Hong Kong.

Local officials are hopeful that a surge in tourists will revitalize the once-vibrant tourism and retail industries, which are thought to have cost the territory some $27 billion as a result of the protracted pandemic restrictions. A day after launching a rebranding effort to entice foreign tourists, Lee announced the full opening of the borders, promising more than 500,000 free flights and "no isolation, no quarantine, and no restrictions."

Hong Kong continues to require outdoor masks, though Lee has stated that the rule might be changed if flu cases decline.
