Ardern leaves a legacy of generosity and disillusionment in New Zealand.

The resignation of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern

WELLINGTON, 19 Jan. Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, shocked the world on Thursday by announcing that she had "no more in the tank" to continue leading the nation and will resign no later than early February and not run for office again. It had been a difficult five and a half years as prime minister, Ardern said, adding that she needed to step down because she was only human. "I had wanted to find a way to get ready for not only another year, but also another term this summer since this year demands it. I was unable to accomplish that "42-year-old Ardern said during a press conference.

"In the wake of this decision, I'm sure there will be much of debate about what the allegedly "true" rationale was. After six years of some significant problems, the only intriguing aspect you will discover is that I am human "She went on. "Politicians are people too. For as long as we can, we give everything we have, but eventually, it must end. And it's time for me."

On Sunday, members of the ruling New Zealand Labour Party will vote for a new leader. The winner will serve as prime minister up to the following general election. A general election will be held on October 14 and Ardern's tenure as a leader will end no later than February 7. According to Ardern, Labour will prevail in the upcoming election. Grant Robertson, the deputy prime minister and finance minister of New Zealand, declared in a statement that he will not run to be the next leader of the Labour Party. With support for Labour declining and the nation anticipated to enter a recession in the upcoming quarter, Ardern's replacement as party leader and prime minister faces a difficult test in a general election.

In a December 1News-Kantar survey, Labour was polling at 33%, down from 40% at the beginning of 2022. Therefore, Labour would not be able to maintain a majority, not even with its usual coalition partner, the Green Party, which is polling at 9%. Commentators suggest a number of Ardern's ministers as candidates for the position, including Kiri Allen, the current minister of justice, and Chris Hipkins, the former minister of COVID and current minister of education and police.

 FAMILY TIME

Ardern asserted that she was leaving the position not because it was difficult, but rather because she thought others could do it better.

In addition to telling her longtime partner Clarke Gayford that it was time for them to get married, she made a point of telling her daughter Neve that she was excited to be there when she started school this year. At age 37, Ardern made history when she was elected as the youngest female head of state in the world in 2017. Riding the "Jacinda-mania" wave, she ardently advocated for women's rights, the eradication of child poverty, and the reduction of economic disparity in the nation.

She became the second elected leader after Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto to give birth while in office eight months after taking office. Ardern was viewed by many as one of a wave of progressive female leaders, such as Sanna Marin, the prime minister of Finland.

A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER IN LABOR

Ardern received praise from all political corners for how she handled the COVID-19 epidemic, which resulted in of the harshest international regulations but also one of the lowest death rates. But over the past year, her support has declined as crime has surged, inflation has soared to levels not seen in over three decades, and the central bank has aggressively raised the cash rate.

Over topics like a government takeover of the water infrastructure and the implementation of an agricultural emissions programme, the nation has become more and more politically divided. The support for Ardern and Labour has declined in the polls.
