UN VOTE ON ISRAEL'S OCCUPATION IS WELCOMED AS "A VICTORY" BY PALESTINIANS

UN VOTE ON ISRAEL'S OCCUPATION IS WELCOMED AS "A VICTORY" BY PALESTINIANS

On Saturday, the Palestinians applauded the UN General Assembly's decision to ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for an assessment of the legal implications of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian lands. The highest U.N. court handling disputes between states is the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which has its headquarters in Hague and is also referred to as the World Court. Although the ICJ lacks the authority to do so, its decisions are enforceable.

Despite this, the vote on Friday poses a problem for Israel's new prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who assumed office on Thursday at the helm of a hard-right coalition that includes organizations that support annexing the occupied West Bank.

In a 1967 conflict, Israel conquered the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians desire for a state. 2014 saw the breakdown of peace talks.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, stated that "the moment has come for Israel to be a state subject to law, and to be held accountable for its continued crimes against our people." Israeli authorities have not yet responded to the vote. Gilad Erdan, Israel's representative to the United Nations, spoke out against it before it started on the Jewish Sabbath.

Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior member of the Palestinian government, claimed on Twitter that the vote "reflects the victory of Palestinian diplomacy." Israel, the United States, and 24 other members voted against the motion, while 53 members abstained. 87 members voted in favor of adopting the request.

The West Bank is largely under Palestinian control, and Israel annexed East Jerusalem in a move that was not recognized internationally. Most nations consider Israel's settlements in those regions to be illegal, but Israel rejects this claim, claiming security reasons as well as Biblical and historical ties to the region.

The ICJ was requested by the U.N. General Assembly to provide an advisory opinion on the legal ramifications of Israel's "occupation, settlement, and annexation," including actions to change the demographic makeup, character, and status of the Palestinian people.
