 Turkey abolishes the retirement age restriction

 


On Wednesday (December 28), Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan abolished the retirement age limit, allowing more than 2 million workers to leave their jobs immediately, less than six months before an election. According to Reuters, the president made the revelation during a news conference on the well-liked policy change on Wednesday.

 

In an effort to rebuild support that had been lost as a result of inflation, a decline in the value of the lira, and a steep decline in living standards, Erdogan's ruling AK Party significantly increased the minimum salary last week. More than 2 million workers will now be able to retire immediately, less than six months before an election, thanks to a decision made by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday (28 December), which scrapped the retirement age restriction.

 

According to Reuters, the president made the announcement on the well-liked policy change during a news conference on Wednesday. As part of an effort to regain support lost to inflation, a decline in the lira, and a dramatic decline in living standards, Erdogan's ruling AK Party significantly increased the minimum wage last week.

Previously, both men and women had to be 60 years old to retire. The cost of the new system wasn't yet known, but according to Erdogan, 2.25 million people would be eligible.
