In an exciting World Cup final, Argentina's Lionel Messi excelled.

Lionel Messi, 35, was the key to Argentina's chances of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, and the superstar delivered in the championship match against France in Qatar.

Lionel Messi won his first Jules Rimet Trophy on his fifth World Cup appearance. Leo Messi cemented himself as the Cup's hero as he joyfully celebrated with his teammates while crying and giving them hugs.

Yet it was never simple. The World Cup required five tries, including a discouraging loss in the Maracana in Brazil in 2014. The monkey on his back he had to get rid of was the defeat to Germany. The soccer star began to doubt his future in the sport and his position on Argentina's national team after suffering yet another heartbreaking defeat in the 2016 Copa America final. But his love for them both helped him overcome his reservations, as he admitted in a statement: "I truly considered leaving. However, I adore this nation and this shirt much too much.

At this year's World Cup, Lionel Messi showed himself to be a player devoid of uncertainties and past demons. He seems committed to doing it on his terms if he was going to succeed this time. Messi led his club to the championship game with crucial goals in the final four crucial games, displaying the heart of a lion throughout the entire competition. He was the driving force behind each victory along the way; he didn't rely on his colleagues and make cameos. He would have to earn his first Jules Rimet match-by-match if he wanted to get it.

The Argentinians held a commanding lead following a spectacular counterattack by teammate Angel Di Maria, and the Fox Sports analysts had all but written off the French opponents. Leo Messi appeared to be cementing his place in history. Up until there were just a few minutes left in the game, the score remained 2-0. The Argentine team appeared worn out but confident in their mission.

Messi's road to triumph, however, was never going to be simple. In front of his country's president, Emmanuel Macron, who had flown in especially for the occasion, Kylian MBappe, a star forward for France, left the best for last, scoring two mesmerizing goals at the eleventh hour to make it an incredible final.

Leo Messi, who did not want to be outdone, had a chance to score in the last seconds, but Hugo Lloris, France's secret weapon and the best goalkeeper in the world (I mean, that man doesn't get enough credit for taking France to the final! ), stopped him with his magical hands. Talk about seeing "God's hand"!

So as the game progressed, so did Messi's dreams of a decisive triumph. Despite appearing worn out and discouraged, the Argentine team managed to draw the game at 3-3 with a sloppy Messi goal that narrowly eluded the goal line in the last seconds of the first overtime.

For just the third time in its history of 22 championship games, the World Cup was forced to enter a second extra period decided by penalty kicks. Messi and MBappe, two prominent players, both scored goals with amazing precision to maintain the intense game's fierce competition. However, it was Emiliano Martinez of Argentina's save of Kolo Muani's kick that gave his nation optimism that a third trophy would be in reach.

Gonzalo Montiel missed the semifinal because of his suspension, but he made the most of his chance in the championship game by scoring the penultimate penalty goal with all of his nation's eyes on him.

However, Argentina's victory will ultimately be remembered primarily for Messi's historic triumph. Lionel Messi has established himself as the face of Argentine soccer and a top contender for the greatest player of all time, emerging from the shadow of the legendary idol Diego Maradona (GOAT). He holds the most goals scored in a World Cup game, the most assists in a World Cup game, the most minutes played in a tournament (beating Paolo Maldini of Italy's record), and the most appearances in a tournament. He is also the top-scoring Argentine.
